Apple, Intel Rumored Working on an iWatch

Chances are you've got an iPod, an iPhone, an iPad -- or perhaps even all three. But would you buy an iWatch if Apple rolled one out? You may have that opportunity.

While the rumor mill is still churning about an Apple TV, Business Insider notes that Chinese blog site Tech163.com is reporting that Apple is in cahoots with Intel to build an iOS watch, and speculates that it is within the realm of possibilities. According to Tech163.com, supply chain resources have leaked details that describe the watch as a Bluetooth-enabled device with a 1.5-inch OLED screen.

Call it the smart watch. Sources say Apple could roll the iWatch to the masses as early as the first half of 2013. It may be just a rumor, though. There's no indication that the late Steve Jobs, co-founder and former CEO of Apple, opined to Walter Isaacson or anyone else about a smart watch before he passed away.

Still, analysts are speculating. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has said wearable computing is something Apple might move into eventually. Apparently, there's at least some market demand. Entrepreneurs raised more than $10 million in a Kickstarter campaign for an iPhone-connected smart watch called the Pebble.

From China to Brazil

Meanwhile, Apple is facing patent battles in China. A Beijing court had ordered the smartphone maker to pay 1.03 million yuan, or about $165,000, to a group of local writers who said the company sold unlicensed copies of its books online, The Wall Street Journal reports.

In a written statement, Apple said its employees "take copyright infringement complaints very seriously" and said it was receptive to the input it has received from writers' groups, the Journal reported. Apple added, "we're always updating our service to better assist content owners in protecting their rights."

UK Engineers Create World’s First Working 3D Printed Electronic Devices

Researchers at the University of Warwick’s School of Engineering have discovered a way to manufacture working electronic devices using 3D printers. To date, the electronic inner workings of products have been manufactured separately from their outer plastic shells, but with the use of a new carbon-rich material called Carbomorph, researchers were able to 3d print working electronic devices including a computer game controller, a motion-sensing glove, and a smart mug that knows how full it is.

Mak3D: World’s First 3D Printing Co-Working Space Opens in London

What do you do if you’re a designer with an amazing idea for a product, but no way to make it? There might a huge buzz around 3D printing, but we’re still a long way off from everyone having a machine at home. If you’re in London, you can head to Mak3d, the world’s first 3D printing co-working environment! Launched in August this year, Mak3d occupies a 1,000 square foot space on East London’s buzzing Brick Lane.

Founded by Nick Allen of 3D printing bureau 3dprintuk, the Mak3d coworking space’s in-house equipment includes a 3D scanner and an Objet30 high definition 3D printer, which produces models from a resin called Vero White Plus.

Allen noticed that though there were co-working spaces in London, most catered to individuals in the technology industry or computer-based designers, and there weren’t many spaces for makers that needed to make noise, and a maybe a bit of a mess. Individuals with ideas can come to the Mak3d space, and working from CAD files, sketches or even just a description, the concept can be turned into a physical model, either with the help of 3dprintuk’s designers, or if the person has the skills, they can do it themselves.

3D designers who rent desk space get access to the 3D scanner and reduced rates for printing. Current residents include a toy designer and jewelry designer Rob Elford, with room for more. Desk space for 3D designers starts at £200 a month, but there’s also the option of free workspace for designers skilled at 3D modelling who are willing to contribute 2 hours a week in work.
