The Incredible Story Of How The Burj Khalifa’s Poop is Trucked Out of Town

You’d think that the world’s tallest building – a structure that requires amazingly complex engineering and technology to reach its heights – would have an equally impressive sewage system. Unfortunately, that’s not the case because it isn’t hooked up to a municipal wastewater treatment system – so when you poop in the Burj Khalifa, that waste is actually trucked out of the city. Trucked out of the city! We’re frankly flabbergasted by the inefficiency of such a system. One of the world’s most advanced buildings relies on an arcane method to transport wastewater to a treatment facility outside of town. So remember, if you happen to visit and use the Burj Khalifa’s restroom, some unfortunate person has to collect your poop and drive it out of Dubai.

In November, Terry Gross of NPR interviewed Kate Ascher, author of The Heights: Anatomy of a Skyscraper, where she explained what happens to sewage from the Burj Khalifa and other tall buildings in Dubai. There are a host of tall buildings in Dubai and many of them aren’t connected to a municipal sewage system. It seems that construction outpaced installation of such an important component of any multistory building – seemingly with the approval of the city planning department. There is some semblance of a system, but it doesn’t have the capacity to handle the output from an 828 meter tower.

In the interview, Ascher explained that “some [buildings] can access a municipal system but many of them actually use trucks to take the sewage out of individual buildings and then they wait on a queue to put it into a waste water treatment plant. So it’s a fairly primitive system.” Trucks often wait in line for up to 24 hours before they can offload their payload. As Gizmodo calculated, a full building with 35,000 people would produce 7 tons of poop per day, plus all the additional wastewater for showers, brushing your teeth and so on, totaling up to 15 tons per day of wastewater.

The inefficiency of such a system is mind-boggling and raises the issue of how architecture is more than just designing a great building. Architects must also consider the impact of their building on the rest of the city and how it will interact with it. It’s all fine and good to build the world’s tallest building, but if you have to remove the waste via inefficient and costly trucks, then you’ve failed.

Here at Inhabitat we’ve been hoping for, and advocating, biodegradable packaging for years, but now designer entrepreneurs are thinking even bigger; how about packaging one could actually consume? Turning what was a waste product into something that could actually confer nutrition (and would degrade quickly if uneaten), could make litter a thing of the past. Several companies have been working on edible packaging over the last couple of years, and as the idea moves closer to reality, Time magazine even called it a ‘game changer’ for 2012. Zouk Architects Repurpose Shipping Materials Into Paper Tube Office

Zouk Architects made creative use of affordable and recycled materials to create an interesting space at minimal expense in their new open plan office, which was later called the “Paper tube” office. Rather than disposing of moving “waste”, Zouk repurposed the unwanted materials as an integral part of the design of their new premise.

Dutch studio Whim Architects has unveiled plans for a floating, self-sustaining home that would respond to rising sea levels—and they hope to construct the island residence from plastic waste currently circling in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The architects are raising funds with a newly launched Kickstarter campaign , and they’re reaching out to plastic recycling experts and professionals to test out their design.

Santa Monica’s Garden / Garden Project Quantifies the Benefits of Sustainable Building

Here at Inhabitat we’ve showcased thousands of green building and sustainable landscaping projects that save water, conserve energy, and minimize waste. But did you know just how much more efficient building green can be? Back in 2004 a project called Garden / Garden launched in Santa Monica to compare how different sustainable building methods stacked up against more traditional plans. The project tracked two neighboring houses and recorded data on water use, labor required, waste produced and other relevant information – and it found that the green house used one fifth the water, produced only a third the amount of waste and required about a quarter of the labor to maintain.

Studio Levant Uses Recycled Pallets and HDPE Plastics To Make Desks and Tables

In en effort to transform waste into functional objects, Australian design firm Studio Levant has produced a full line of tables and desks that are made from recycled shipping pallets and recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastics. “The pallets themselves are quite detailed, so the designers have decided to keep it simple and use bold colors to give each peace a character,” writes Ivan Levant. The pallets used to make the pieces are made from wood harvested from sustainably managed forests that is free from copper, cadmium and arsenic. The resulting pieces of furniture have clean lines and warm tones, and thanks to heavy-duty caster wheels, they are easy to move and rearrange.
