The Natural Wood and Moss Keyboard Brings A Natural Touch to Your Computer

Tired of the “cold and lifeless” aesthetic of modern technological objects, Robbie Tilton decided to warm things up a little by constructing a keyboard made from wood and moss. Instead of using the visually clean but texturally boring traditional materials of plastic, glass or metal, he instead chose to build the Natural Keyboard out of organic materials.

Tired of Windows? Make a Date with a Penguin

September 24th, 2012
The stereotype of a Linux user as a hardcore tech head is long gone. The operating system with the penguin logo now comes in a variety of modern and easy-to-use versions. It's no longer even necessary to give up Windows, Mac OS or all your computer's programs before making the switch.

"As a rule users are people who are annoyed by something about Windows," says Hans-Georg Esser, chief editor of the German magazine EasyLinux. "Windows is known for its many security problems."

Compare that to the world of the penguin, with no malware or bots. Linux users don't need virus scanners. Plus, the operating system can always be reconfigured and the user interface can always be changed.

Despite this, Linux is still not very widely used. In Germany for example statistics service StatCounter found that only 2 per cent of computer users had opted for Linux by July 2012. That compares to 88 per cent who opted for Windows and 7 per cent for Mac OS X.

Most beginners initially opt for the free Ubuntu version of Linux. "Beginning Linux users are usually very satisfied with it," said Esser. Very few hardware or driver problems are reported. And, if there are problems that are beyond a beginning Linux user, there are always expert services available, like www.fsf.org http://www.fsf.org/ , which checks hardware system compatibility.

The most up-to-date version of Ubuntu is called 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin. LTS stands for Long Term Support, meaning there will be updates for this version for five years. Applications like the Firefox browser, the email program Thunderbird, Libre Office as well as music and video players, a messenger service and a document viewer all come pre-installed.

This version comes in 32- or 64-bit versions. Beginners should opt for 32-bit, advises Esser. Ubuntu can be downloaded for free, but it also frequently...
