The Lexmark Platinum Pro905 is an all-in-one Inkjet printer with iPhone and iPod Touch compatibility built in. It can basically do anything you throw at it: print, scan, copy, fax, all through a beautiful touchscreen interface that works like a charm. When it comes to all-in-one printers, this machine is right up there with the best of them.
When I first received the printer, I was wondering what the setup would be like, as I’ve been through some pretty tricky printer setups in the past. Sometimes finding a driver can be a daunting task. As soon as you plug it in, it takes you through step by step instructions on the touchscreen that a 12 year old could follow. It was a very smooth setup and within 15 minutes of having it out of the box I was printing.
The touchscreen interface is very nice to use. The home screen has 4 large icons for copying, scanning, fax and ‘smart solutions’. The smart solutions button is pretty neat. There is a setting for copying ID cards and one you register online you can create one touch solutions for complicated print jobs, etc. This is a wi-fi printer which is very handy! No USB cable going to your computer. It can be sitting in the basement and you can print from up in the attic if you want. Setting up the printer on the network is very simple as it scans for the available networks and you punch in the password on the screen and you’re ready to go.
One thing I was surprised with is that the printer came with a second paper tray. Typically those are bought separately. This allows you to have different size paper in the trays for separate tasks. Putting them together is as easy as setting the main unit on top of the second tray. There are a couple other handy features such as a USB port on the front as well as a spot for an SD card. This allows you to scan documents onto the memory device and you can choose between PDF and JPEG formats. My only complaint about the scanning is that it’s a bit slow.
Now let’s get down to what you want to know, how well does this work with the iPhone? First of all, you need to download the LexPrint app from the AppStore which is free. You can choose to print from your photo library or take a picture then and print it. It only has picture printing capabilities. An added ability to be able to print documents would be nice. It is a pretty simple app and easy to use. You must be connected to the same network as the printer, obviously. When I first tried printing, the app prompted me to download a program on my computer, but it told me right where to find it, and after that, the printing worked great. The ability to print pictures straight from the iPhone is very nice to have, let me tell you.
Now the price for this printer is pretty steep coming in at around $400 so it might not be for everyone. A printer like this is however good for a professional that has a lot to do and has all the capabilities one would need. The touchscreen in itself is a pretty great thing. It’s big, bright, responds nicely to the touch and if fun to use. It comes with a color cartridge and a black cartridge and they even sell black replacement cartridges for the low price of $6.99! If you’re looking for a higher end printer with some fun tech options built in, take a peek at the Lexmark Platinum Pro905, if you’re like me, you won’t be disappointed.
