The iPhone can be accredited to the success of Pandora, the free online radio service since two years ago the company was close to closing their doors due to new copyright royalties that had Pandora facing bankruptcy before a settlement was reached.

The good news is that since 2008, those listening to Pandora have actually quadrupled with the success attributed to the iPhone and other smart phones. Pandora had it first profitable quarter and last year brought in around $40 million in revenue.

At the CES, Westergren, Pandora’s chief strategy officer showed Pandora on TVs, Blu-ray players, clock radios, car audio systems, TV set-top boxes, and other devices.

Ford Motor company has plans to feature a Pandora app in their next-generation Sync in-car communication system. The $200 Sony Dash is a web connected clock radio that will let you personalize your radio station from Pandora. LG, Samsung, and Vizio are also creating Televisions with built in access to Pandora.

Westergren’s commented about Pandora success, “We’re getting to participate in a much bigger arena, which is anytime, anywhere.” He went on to explain, “Broadcast radio’s genius a long time ago was, ‘Let’s get into the car, into the home, on clock radios.’ We want to do the same thing with Net radio, and that’s happened.”

Internet radio users are increasing rapidly, but Pandora offers something different in that users can shape their station based on their own tastes.
