Is it just me or has Bill Clinton recently surpassed his former VP, Al Gore, when it comes to addressing things like renewable energy and climate change? He regularly makes appearances pushing for solutions such as utility decoupling and increasing the energy efficiency of buildings, and his foundation puts his words into action with its green projects like retrofitting the Empire State Building and installing LEDs throughout Los Angeles.

So, it was exciting to hear that Clinton shares the view of this blog concerning Cash for Clunkers. At the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas this week, he called out the program for setting mpg limits for the "efficient" cars too low and suggested the government create a similar program that offers rebates for EVs.

He said the overwhelming response to Cash for Clunkers “proves that Americans will bite if you make it economical enough.” I wonder if he reads EcoGeek...

I don't think the government should throw money at consumers every time we need to get a new technology off the ground, but in the case of EVs, we're addressing something much bigger. Increasing demand for EVs doesn't just help one industry or the economy as a whole, but could make way for an entirely new infrastructure - one that could significantly reduce our fuel consumption and emissions.
