BotObjects just unveiled the world’s first full-color desktop 3D printer – the ProDesk3D. Instead of producing monochromatic objects with a single piece of filament, the new ProDesk3D allows designers to pick a desired shade and quickly print the final product with a 5 color PLA re-usable cartridge system.

Just as traditional inkjet printers made the leap from black-and-white to full color, 3D printers will soon be able to recreate all the hues of the rainbow. In addition to a cartridge system that allows for the mixing of colors, the ProDesk3D features a dual extruder head that helps to refine the printing process and eliminate the need for time-consuming finishing methods or chemicals. The precise machine can print down to 25 microns, and it’s capable of fabricating ABS material as well as PVA and PVA plastic. The tri-fan system lets air flow across the build platform, ensuring more accuracy as it functions.

The ProDesk3D is not currently available for purchase, but early orders and inquiries can be made at BotObjects’ official website. The printer is a potential game-changer for rapid-prototyping and home fabrication technology.

4StrikeBike Can Be Pedalled With Hands and Feet at the Same Time

The 4StrikeBike features handlebars that double as an extra set of pedals! Designed by Dutch firm TSG Essempio, the bike is a real treat for passionate cyclists, people with back problems and compulsive multi-taskers. The hand pedals can be fixed upright when navigating city traffic or engaged to provide extra power when crossing longer distances at higher speeds. Retired Dutch surgeon Lex van Stekelenburg came up with the idea after developing back problems. The bike works therapeutically by distributing body weight more naturally than a conventional bicycle.

Propelling the 4StrikeBike is a fluid process which uses the strength of ones whole body in an alternating fashion-from front to back, left to right and vice-versa. The motion resembles that of four-legged animals, bringing the entire body in the cycling process and providing a higher level of exercise. While regular bikes activate around 50 different muscle groups, the 4StrikeBike uses 78 muscle groups, according to the designers.

The gravitational force is shifted alternately from the left handle to the right handle and back, bringing them, together with the crank, into motion. The ”handlebike” drive system is combined with the “foot bike” drive system  in a synchronized fashion, offering different cycling modes which suit various traffic scenarios and personal preferences of the cyclist.

Space Farms: Heliospectra LED Lighting System Could Grow Veggies in Space

Heliospectra’s new LED lighting system has been chosen by the German Aerospace Center (DRL) as part of the EDEN (Evolution and Design of Environmentally-closed Nutrition sources) research initiative. The Institute of Space Systems in Bremen, Germany, will use Heliospectra’s advanced lighting technology in its research to develop bioregenerative life support systems for use in remote locations both here on Earth and in outer space.

Heliospectra will provide a variety of lighting options for growing vegetables and fruits in totally isolated environments such as a research station in Antarctica or a greenhouse module on Mars. Their recently launched L4A Series 10 LED light system which will help researchers gather information and make new discoveries in the plant sciences.

One of the current research projects at the Institute focuses on testing the greenhouse module at the Neumayer Station III in Antarctica, where the winter team stays in total isolation for nine months in a row in a hostile environment. Researchers plan to find ways to produce food for the crew and investigate the ways in which plants influence humans in isolation.
